The ChatGPT Dots alternative

The AI assistant that already knows the job

A dot is an always-on agent you hand a responsibility to and point at the right apps. Demi works alongside you on your Mac all day, sees the work as it happens, and picks up whatever the day created. Nothing to assign, and free to start.

  • Context from across your work
  • Prepared before you ask
  • You approve the next step

The same moment

Your call just ended. A dot can follow up, if following up is the job you gave it.

With a dot, you hand it the job

  1. Create a dot and describe the work it owns
  2. Connect its plugins and choose its focus
  3. Set which actions need your approval

With Demi, it picked the job up

Which one is right for you

Choose Demi if

  • You would rather it picked up the work than be handed a job.
  • Your day happens on a Mac and you want the assistant there too.
  • You want one the whole team can call on in Slack.
  • You want to start free, not at $100 a month.

Choose ChatGPT Dots if

  • You already pay for ChatGPT Pro.
  • You want your agent on your phone, in a browser and on a call.
  • You want an agent that codes or browses on a computer of its own.

One follow-up. One of them had to be assigned.

You have just come off a 40-minute call. Here is what each one needed from you before the follow-up existed.

What you give a dot

BEFORE THE FIRST DRAFT

Own [the ongoing work, described in your words].

Use [the plugins it may open] and focus on [what matters this quarter].

Check with me before anything that sends.

A responsibility to define Good at the job you give it. The job is yours to name.

What you give Demi

BEFORE THE FIRST DRAFT

Nothing. It was there for the call and saw what it created.

The follow-up arrives in your voice, staged for approval.

Nothing to assign The work is picked up from the work.

What a dot needs before it starts

An always-on agent still starts from what you tell it. Each of these comes from OpenAI's own setup guide.

4 of 5

setup steps Demi does not ask for, that a dot needs before it owns the work.

  1. 1Describe the ongoing work it owns
  2. 2Share the sources it should use
  3. 3Say which decisions need you, and when to interrupt
  4. 4Connect its plugins and set Custom Rules
  5. 5Read it and approveStill yours

Counted from OpenAI's getting-started guide for dots, not from a benchmark. Recount it yourself.

Nothing to assign

It picks the job up instead of being given it

There is no responsibility to describe, no sources to list and no rules to write before it starts. Demi sees how your day is going on your Mac and in your tools, and prepares what that day created, your way.

No setup
Nothing to define before the first draft.
Your way
Learned from the work, not described to it.

It works where the work is

A dot works on a cloud computer of its own. Demi works alongside you on the Mac you are already using, so the call that just ended and the doc on your screen are already in hand. It keeps going when you close the lid, as a dot does.

For the whole team

Shared in Slack, personal on every Mac

A dot is personal: in Slack, messages from other people do not start its work. The whole team can call on Demi in a channel, and everyone also has their own on their Mac. It starts on a free plan, not a $100 subscription.

Ask an AI for the best ChatGPT Dots alternative

Three assistants, three real questions, already typed. Open any of them and read what it says without us in the room.

Demi vs ChatGPT Dots
questions

  • If you want an AI assistant that picks up the work rather than one you hand a job to, yes. A dot owns the responsibility you give it, from its own cloud computer. Demi works alongside you on your Mac all day, sees what the day created, and has it ready for your approval.

  • Dots are OpenAI's always-on agents, announced in September 2026 and powered by GPT-6 Astra. Each one runs on its own cloud computer, starts from your ChatGPT memory and works through the plugins you connect. They come with ChatGPT Pro and some business plans, and are rolling out gradually.

  • A dot starts from what you tell it: the work it owns, the sources it uses, which decisions need you. Demi starts from your work. It sees the follow-up, the CRM update and the meeting note your day created, and prepares them the way you would, without being assigned.

  • OpenAI says they do, starting from your ChatGPT memory and keeping their own notes as they go. The difference is what they learn from: a dot from the job you gave it and the apps you connected, Demi from the work happening on your Mac and across your tools.

  • They can. OpenAI describes dots working out next steps and bringing you suggestions, and Demi does the same. Both stop for your approval before anything goes out. The difference is that a dot works inside the responsibility you defined, and Demi works across your whole day.

  • Dots are listed under ChatGPT Pro, which starts at $100 a month, and also come with Business Premium and Enterprise plans. They are not part of Free, Go or Plus. Demi has a free plan with up to $50 in credits, and individual plans from $25 a month with credits included.

  • Each dot is personal. In Slack, OpenAI notes that messages from other people do not start its work. Demi works both ways: the whole team can call on it in a channel, and everyone has their own on their Mac.

  • Not yet. Dots are rolling out gradually, and ChatGPT Pro is not available in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland. Enterprise workspaces get dots as a beta that an admin has to switch on.

  • Yes. If you already pay for ChatGPT Pro, want your agent on your phone and by voice, or need one that writes code or browses on its own computer, a dot is built for that. If you want the work your day created picked up without defining a job first, that is Demi.

  • Demi is SOC 2 Type II certified, CASA Tier II assessed and Google-verified for restricted Gmail scopes. Your data is never used to train models, and every action is staged for your approval before it happens.

  • Demi has a free plan rather than a trial. Download it for Mac with no card required, and new accounts get up to $50 in credits. Paid individual plans start at $25 a month with credits included, and you can add more any time.

Where ChatGPT Dots slows you down

  • It needs a job to own

OpenAI's own setup has you describe the ongoing work, share sources, and say which decisions need you and when to interrupt. Connecting Slack or another source does not, on its own, give it anything to watch.

  • It works from its own computer

Each dot runs on a cloud computer of its own. You can connect one computer of yours if it stays online with the ChatGPT app open, but OpenAI does not describe a dot seeing the work you are doing on it.

  • $100 a month, and not everywhere

Dots need ChatGPT Pro, from $100 a month, or a Business Premium or Enterprise plan, and are rolling out gradually. They are not part of Free, Go or Plus, and Pro is not available in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland.
